SINGAPORE – On Tuesday, Singapore’s MediaCorp Theater was transformed into a star-studded venue for the Earthshot Awards, with Emmy Award winners Hannah Waddingham and Sterling K. Brown serving as co-hosts. The event, dubbed the “Eco Oscars,” celebrated the extraordinary achievements of five inspiring initiatives that are addressing some of the world’s most pressing environmental challenges.
The 2023 Earthshot Award winners are:
Protecting and Restoring Nature: Acción Andina, a grassroots initiative working to protect native forest ecosystems in the Andes Mountains of South America.
Cleaning Our Air: GRST, a company developing new ways to manufacture and recycle lithium-ion batteries to reduce the environmental impact of electric vehicles.
Revive Our Oceans: Wild Rescue Marine Program, an organization working to end illegal fishing and strengthen marine conservation efforts.
BUILDING A WASTE-FREE WORLD: S4S Technologies, a company that provides solar-powered dryers and processing tools to help small farmers reduce food waste and create value from their crops.
Fixing Our Climate: Boomitra, a platform that incentivizes land restoration through a proven carbon credit market, effectively eliminating emissions from the atmosphere.
Each of the winners received a £1 million grant to further scale up their innovative solutions. In addition, all 15 finalists will receive bespoke support from a global consortium of partners to extend their reach.
The awards ceremony featured performances by renowned musicians and entertainers including Bastille, OneRepublic and Bebe Rexha, and in his speech, Prince William praised the winners and finalists for their dedication to the environment and urged everyone to work with a spirit of ingenuity and inspiration to protect the planet.
“The winners and finalists of the ‘Earth Strive Awards’ remind us all that the spirit of ingenuity and the ability to inspire change remains wherever we are on the planet,” Prince William said. “They are proof that we can create a brighter future for our planet where we live in harmony with nature and prosper together.”
The Earthshot Prize was launched by Prince William in 2020 and was inspired by President John F. Kennedy’s moon landing challenge to put a man on the moon. The award seeks to find and fund the most innovative solutions to the five most significant environmental problems facing humanity: protecting and restoring nature, cleaning our air, revitalizing our oceans, building a waste-free world, and fixing our climate.
