Kate Simon on her unforgettable experience with Bob Marley

It’s been more than four decades, but photographer Kate Simon’s memories of accompanying Bob Marley and the Wailers on their European tour in 1977 remain vivid. She fondly recalls her first meeting with the reggae legend at Lyceum College in London, where she was covering his show for a newspaper. They hit it off right away, with a rapport that went beyond the professional.

Marley’s invitation to Simon to travel to Jamaica to shoot the iconic cover of his album Kaya further cemented their bond, and Simon eventually joined Marley and the Shouters on their European tour. These experiences culminated in her new book, Rebel Music: Bob Marley and Roots Reggae, which was re-released on November 7 and features personal photographs of Simon, as well as unheard stories from those who knew Marley best.

In Simon’s memory, Marley was a complex and charismatic character. She describes Marley as “soft-spoken and very disciplined,” always committed to his craft and those around him. However, he also had a mischievous side, enjoying playing soccer, riding his bike and cracking lighthearted jokes.

In addition to his musical talent, Simon emphasized Marley’s vast knowledge and his role as a teacher with a message of love, solidarity, and defense of individual rights. She believes that the enduring power of Marley’s music stems from these universal themes and the true emotions he conveys.

Simon shares the stories behind six iconic images from her reprint book:

Soccer in the Air: taken in Germany, this photograph depicts Marley and his entourage playing soccer, reflecting his love of physical activity amidst his busy touring schedule.

Contemplation on the tour bus: This intimate portrait captures the introspective side of Marley, who was often immersed in reflection and spiritual exploration.

ICONIC KAYA COVER: Simon recalls the impromptu nature of this shoot, capturing Marley’s genuine laughter when he jokingly challenged him to a breaststroke race at the Sheraton Hotel pool.

Glimpses of Vulnerability: This backstage photo captures Marley in a pensive moment, hinting at the challenges he faced with his toe injury and eventual melanoma diagnosis.

PRE-PERFORMANCE RITUALS: Simon describes Marley’s pre-show routine, which included smoking vanilla for communion and preparing for the exhilarating energy he brought to the show.

Simon’s recollections attest to Marley’s profound influence as a musician, humanitarian, and friend. She emphasized Marley’s message of interdependence, advocating unity and fraternity as the guiding principles of a harmonious society.
