Team USA Familiarizing Themselves with Fresh FIBA Regulations in Anticipation of World Cup

In the initial half of USA Basketball’s opening exhibition match on their pre-World Cup tour this summer, only 1.4 seconds remained, and the American team had possession at the far end of the court. U.S. coach Steve Kerr opted for a quick inbounds pass and a last-ditch shot attempt.

Had this scenario unfolded in San Francisco or any NBA city, Kerr might not have chosen to call a timeout. However, this summer, he’s coaching under FIBA rules. After gaining insight into how timeouts don’t carry over into the second half per FIBA rules, Kerr realized he could have used one to devise a more strategic play.

Kerr mentioned, “These exhibition games serve their purpose — both for players and coaches.”

While the international and NBA games share many similarities such as the height of the rims, the 5-on-5 format, and the rules governing fouls, there are notable differences that will set the World Cup apart from the familiar U.S. style of play.

As the U.S. team’s five-game exhibition series concludes this week in Abu Dhabi, they have the opportunity to acclimate to these differences.

Milwaukee Bucks’ forward Bobby Portis noted, “The two games are fundamentally different.”

Notable differences include shorter quarters at the FIBA level (10 minutes compared to the NBA’s 12), adjustments in the 3-point line dimensions, a five-foul limit for fouling out (unlike the NBA’s six), the absence of a defensive 3-second rule, and alterations in timeout usage. Additionally, once the ball touches the rim, both offense and defense can engage with it, eliminating any goaltending or interference concerns.

Orlando Magic’s forward Paolo Banchero mentioned the distinct physicality in FIBA games, emphasizing a faster pace due to the shorter 40-minute game time.

Despite these variations, Memphis Grizzlies’ center Jaren Jackson Jr., the reigning NBA Defensive Player of the Year, appreciates FIBA’s rules for allowing greater defensive freedom.

While adapting to the learning curve, the U.S. team appears to be assimilating well to the rule differences. Having FIBA referees during training camp contributed to the team’s success in their exhibition matches, with a 3-0 record and convincing victories, including an impressive win against Spain.

New York Knicks’ point guard Jalen Brunson pointed out that FIBA games not only have shorter quarters but also briefer timeouts, contributing to a faster-paced experience compared to the NBA.
